VPOP3 Spamfilter

"HTTP Error - HTTP/1.1 429 Too Many Requests" warning with Spamfilter updates

If you have a version of VPOP3 prior to v7.7, and you have the VPOP3 Connection Schedule configured for more frequent connections than every 5 minutes, then you may see in the Settings -> Spamfilter page, the text "HTTP Error - HTTP/1.1 429 Too Many Requests" This is nothing to worry about. The update server is throttling requests for spamfilter update checks to once every 5 minutes per IP address. This is because the server was being heavily loaded by very frequent requests which were not d...

Change link address in quarantine emails

> Hi, > I have recently re addressed my vpop3 server which has generally worked quite well but I have a problem with the spam filter. > Every day I receive an email listing quarantined email with a link next to each which I can click to access the e-mail in my web > browser to release it. This link still includes the old server address. Where is the setting it uses to form the link url so I can > update it to use the new address pls? This is set in Settings -> Spam Filte...

Why are there more than 2 columns in the Spam Rule Weights table in the VPOP3 settings?

Each column in this table lets you define rule weights for different 'conditions'. The conditions are set by the spam filter scripts. Internally, the spam filter scripting system allows you have as many different 'conditions' as you wish. The default spam filter rules only define two - when the Bayesian analyser thinks the chance of a message being spam is <=90% and when it thinks it's >90%, but custom rules may define as many as they want. If a spam rule definition defines more than 2 ...

Errors forwarding messages to spam@

> When users are forwarding spam to spam@ourdomain.com to add them to the spamfilter lists as directed to on the quarantine reports we are getting more of these undeliverable errors? > > Subject: Mail Delivery Failure > > Delivery Failure Report. > The following message was incorrectly addressed. > Recipient: "spam" is unrecognised. That error happens when there is incoming mail for an unrecognised user. So, someone must be sending a message to 'spam@' from outsid...

Local email addresses on the spamfilter whitelist

If you put an address on the whitelist which is also in a 'local domain', then, by default VPOP3 will ignore that when checking _incoming_ mail. This is because spammers often send spam pretending to be from the same domain as the recipient. In most cases, mail from local domains will be sent locally, not incoming, so, usually, this is a sensible rule to follow. If you look in the messages headers of a filtered message, then VPOP3 will add a header line like: X-VPOP3-WL: Skip Local (email.add...

Disabling spamfilter false positive reports from being sent to PSCS

> I have noticed emails going to notspam@pscs.co.uk > > Is this a feature I can disable? Yes, but it's not too straightforward to disable it totally - because it's an option which people choose when they release messages from the quarantine. The simplest thing to do to just make it not work is probably to create a Mapping of 'notspam@pscs.co.uk' to 'no-one'. Other than that - to disable it for the administrator: In Settings -> Spam filter -> Quarantine Viewer, at the...

Local email addresses are being blocked by the spam filter

By default, VPOP3 will treat INCOMING mail from local email addresses as suspicious, because this is not normal. Normally, mail from local email addresses will be sent by the users through the VPOP3 mail server so will not be filtered by the spam filter. However, if you have local mail coming in from across the Internet for some reason, then VPOP3 will see that as suspicious because it is a very common spam trick to send spam from the same domain as the recipient, in the hope that the sen...

How to whitelist a sender so the spamfilter won't block them

The VPOP3 spam filter has a "whitelist" facility so that you can specify email addresses which will never be blocked by the spam filter. Go to Settings -> Spamfilter -> White/Black Lists, and choose the Whitelist Addresses tab. In the Entries to add box, type the email address(es) you want to add to the whitelist. If you add multiple addresses, put each one on a line of its own. You can specify a full email address or use wildcards (eg *@example.com), or use regular expressions if you...

Turning the spam filter on or off

To turn the spam filter on or off go to the VPOP3 settings, then Settings → Spamfilter → General Check the Enable Spam/Content filter on SMTP messages box to have VPOP3 process incoming SMTP and locally sent messages Check the Enable Spam/Content filter on POP3 messages box to have VPOP3 process incoming POP3 messages (Uncheck the boxes to turn the spam filter off) Note that even if you get your incoming messages using POP3, it is a good idea to have VPOP3 process SMTP messages as it wil...
